Kids Call to Order Pizza Day (April 22)

Calling to order pizza is a classic American rite of passage that most kids today – due to smartphones and apps – have never experienced. But that’s about to change, starting in our hometown – Kansas City!

As part of Project Landline, we are partnering with Minsky’s Pizza and their 17 KC Metro restaurants to create Kids Call to Order Pizza Day. On Wednesday, April 22 from open to close, kids are encouraged to do just that – pick up the phone and order pizza.

Why? Two reasons:

1. Minsky’s will donate 40% of all purchases to Screen Sanity (must mention Screen Sanity at checkout or use promo code DGSS40 if ordering online). We are so grateful for their support!

2. With the decline of landline phones and an increase in online communication, kids have been stripped of meaningful skill-building opportunities that come with voice conversation. There are many benefits to picking up the phone and ordering a pizza, including:

  • Builds confidence: Some kids may be nervous to call, but overcoming uncertainty shows them they are capable. Little doses of resilience like this add up throughout childhood
  • Increases planning and communication skills: Organizing their family’s order, payment information and address improve executive functioning skills. And ordering via voice helps improve their communication
  • Builds self-esteem: Research shows that when children contribute to their family via chores, helping to cook a meal or in this case, ordering a meal, it increases their belonging and significance, and ultimately their self-esteem.

We’ve even created a Pizza Ordering Worksheet to provide a little guidance for kids making the call. If you don’t have kids (or your kid is too little), no worries. Adults are welcome to order pizza to help support Screen Sanity.

We’ve always loved pizza night (or day), but Kids Call to Order Pizza Day brings something extra special: a business investing in kids’ digital and mental health, plus an opportunity for children to grow and learn. With those ingredients in place, this pizza party is sure to be especially delicious. Let’s dig in!

P.S. We are excited to hear how the phone calls go. Share your stories at info@screensanity.org or tag us (@screensanity) on Instagram or Facebook.
